TWO DAYS LATER, IN HIGGINS'S ROOM
Cardaniel80: (Higgins sits listening to a waltz on his Edison machine, resting his head on his hand, the fingers covering his eyes.) Thantasy: [Liza] <Enters quietly, not looking her best...> Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (It ends. He sighs, and gets up to wind it and listen again.) Thantasy: [Liza] <Very dirty, looks as if she has been wearing the same clothes for days.> Thantasy: [Liza] <Standing quietly, waiting for him to see her.> Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Sees a movement out of the corner of his eye, turns.) Oh! Ahhh... oh! Thantasy: [Liza] Sir, I've come back. Thantasy: [Liza] <Head down.> Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Wants to rush to explain everything to her, realizes he has no idea how to begin.) No, he thinks, this is not turning out any better than I thought it would.) Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Nods, somewhat on familiar territory. If in such a way, using his expertise, he might somehow make her happy....) At least that way I can do something you'll appreciate.> Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Feels, now, that this may be the same thing as seeing a friend with a mortal physical wound -- you cannot do anything to help him, except to comfort him in his final moments.) Cardaniel80: [Higgins] You brought... what is it? Thantasy: [Liza] I'll get it. Thantasy: [Liza] <Turns, sees Pickering and Martha. In her surprise, she lets her lips quiver, but quickly controls it. She walks past them, fetches an object from beside the door, and brings it in.> Cardaniel80: [Pickering] (Thought briefly of asking "How are you," but dismisses it as tactless.) Thantasy: [Liza] As you can see, sir. It's pretty simple. It's a clear glass jug with the bottom broken out. Thantasy: [Liza] I've padded the broken end with cloth. It fits over me head and makes a pretty tight fit. With a little more fabric around it, couldn't no air get in that way. Thantasy: [Liza] And when a cork is put in the top of the jug, can't no air get in at all. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Looks at the device thoughtfully, first appraising it automatically in a professional way.... and then a thought occurs to him.) Thantasy: [Liza] Kind of like what you made for the two nice young women, only much simpler. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I... believe we could seal it quite effectively, yes. Thantasy: [Liza] And it will allow me to be, well, held by someone... Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Looks to see whether the same thought has occurred to Pickering.) Thantasy: [Liza] without that person having to suffer the same fate as I do. Cardaniel80: (Pickering's expression is blank, unreadable.) Thantasy: [Liza] <Turns to the colonel.> I was also hoping that maybe afterwards, Colonel, you might, well... Thantasy: [Liza] try out some new recipe on me. Thantasy: [Liza] That way, I can somewhat pay for the trouble that I'm putting you to. Cardaniel80: [Pickering] (Looks quickly at Martha.) I... yes, I would consider it a special privilege. Thantasy: [Martha] <Doing her best to keep quiet.> Thantasy: [Liza] I would ask, though, that maybe what was left of me could be buried out by the darling two young ladies. Thantasy: [Liza] <Looking from one to the other.> Does it sound like a fair proposition? Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I am sure we can manage that... they would love to have you as a neighbor, I'm sure. Thantasy: [Liza] Well, I'm not much company, but they are tolerant, I'm sure. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Errr, Colonel? Cardaniel80: (Pickering fails to read Higgins's face as well.) Cardaniel80: [Pickering] I'm sure they would be pleased. They... loved you, you know... Thantasy: [Liza] Well, it's good to know that somebody did. Thantasy: [Martha] Liza..... Cardaniel80: [Pickering] (Winces as the words escape his mouth.... addressed to a girl who doesn't believe any living person loves her.) Thantasy: [Martha] Are you sure? Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, yes. I've quite made up me mind. I figure this is the best life has to offer me. And I'm.....lucky I knows someone who can help. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] When... ah, that is... when? Thantasy: [Liza] Well, I don't feel as I need much time. I do want to write one letter. Which I would prefer you open afterwards. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] You should take all the time you feel you need, Eliza. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Somehow his habit of calling her "my dear" doesn't feel right, just now.) Thantasy: [Liza] I think I would like a good night's sleep and the opportunity to get myself cleaned up. (Forlorn smile.) I haven't made the acquaintance of a bar of soap in a while. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Oh, indeed, of course. We have not disturbed your room, of course. Thantasy: [Liza] I don't really see much point in postponing the event. If it would suit your convenience, I think I could be ready tomorrow. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] We might plan the... event, for late morning, perhaps. Thantasy: [Liza] <Gulps.> That would suit me, sir. Thantasy: [Liza] I will want a bit of personal attention, of course, prior to the... event. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Colonel, would you intend to.... participate? Cardaniel80: [Pickering] (Doesn't need to look at Martha about this one, shakes his head immediately.) Not this time, Professor. Thantasy: [Liza] Well, perhaps you could be on hand, both of you. Just to sort of observe the proceedings, if it's not an inconvenience. Cardaniel80: [Pickering] Oh, I would certainly be there, Liza. I just didn't plan to engage in an active way. Thantasy: [Martha] I'm sure we would be honored, Eliza. Thantasy: [Liza] Thank you very much. I will be grateful. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I will try to make it very.... well, as pleasant as I know how to make it. Thantasy: [Liza] I have every confidence in you, sir. You are very good at what you do. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Shrinks a little inside at her compliment. He knew at least one thing he had proven not to be very good at.) Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Thank you, Eliza. And I must tell you that... you are, as well. Thantasy: [Liza] If it's all the same to you, I'll retire to my room and prepare for a nice bath. Then write my letter and get some sleep. Thantasy: [Martha] Do you want any help, dear? Thantasy: [Liza] (Same forlorn smile.) No, I think I can manage to wash meself all right. Thank you just the same. Cardaniel80: [Pickering] We will have dinner shortly. Would you want to join us for that, Liza? Thantasy: [Liza] I don't have much appetite, sir. Perhaps a bowl of soup in my room. If it's not an inconvenience. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] How could it.... that is, no, it's no trouble at all, Eliza. Cardaniel80: [Pickering] I understand. We will not be seeing you until morning, then? Thantasy: [Liza] I'm not such good company, sir. I would not want to be inflicting myself on you. I'll just go now, unless there's anything more to be said. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Opens his mouth, closes it. Opens it again.) We shall see you in the morning, then. Thantasy: [Liza] Yes, sir. Good evening, now. Cardaniel80: [Pickering] Yes, good evening, Liza. Thantasy: [Liza] <Quiet, dejected, exits.> Cardaniel80: (As soon as they hear noises from Liza's room, so that he knows she can't hear them, Pickering says) Higgins! What are you thinking? Cardaniel80: [Higgins] What do you mean? Thantasy: [Martha] Yes! Thantasy: [Martha] How can you let that poor girl walk out of here like that???? Cardaniel80: [Pickering] For Heaven's sake, why didn't you just tell her? Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Okay, yes, I know what you are thinking.... Thantasy: [Martha] The poor thing is as sad as an aged owl with a secret sorrow. I'm sure that she came back her only so she could die in your arms. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I really believe it must be like this. If I were to blurt out "Oh, Eliza, I can't let you do this, I love you," in her present state of mind she wouldn't believe it. Thantasy: [Martha] Well, you do have a point. I suppose it would stretch credibility a bit. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] She heard me talking about the bet. She knows we were not telling her the truth before. Why should she believe me now? In fact.... Thantasy: [Martha] Indeed. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] ... I think she would simply take it as another rejection. I would be rejecting her as a client -- with yet another lie, as she sees it. Thantasy: [Martha] I must admit that your rational point of view makes sense. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] But if we go through with it... well, look, you saw how the thing was made, didn't you? How it works? Thantasy: [Martha] Yes. Like putting a butterfly in a jar. Rather appropriate, as a matter of fact. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] After she faints, after she thinks her life is over, THEN we bring her back... all we have to do is pull the plug out, let some air in.... Cardaniel80: [Higgins] ... she will be back from the dead, among the living... at THAT point, I feel she will believe me. Thantasy: [Martha] Yes, she did tell us about her experience with the snake woman. But it sounds so risky! Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Yes, I agree. And it is hard to see how to make it less risky. But we must do it this way. It is the only way we can bring her back... I mean REALLY bring her back. Thantasy: [Martha] I hope that you know what you're doing. Just the same, I'll bring along my smelling salts. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Sighs.) I hope so too... but you really must leave that to me. I behaved atrociously and clumsily with her on a personal lervel. But this is professional now. Thantasy: [Martha] <Realizes that the male principle at its best is in operation now. The pride that a man takes in his work -- not to be argued with or belittled.> Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Now, you will help me, at the end, won't you? I shall need as much help as I can muster. It will be close. Thantasy: [Martha] Yes, I have had a bit of training. Thought it best to prepare myself in case Lucy should have been in need towards the end. Thantasy: [Martha] I will study the manual that I was given. Refresh myself tonight. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Ah, yes, of course you have. Now... Martha, do you suppose she would allow you to stay with her a bit tonight? It doesn't seem as if she would do away with herself when she has already arranged for that anyway, but I dislike the idea of her being totally alone. Thantasy: [Martha] I'll see if she will have me for company. She apparently wants to keep her council about her feelings for you even now. It would be natural for my to pry, to ask her what had happened. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] You might ask, and see what she will tell you, but I think you are right, you won't get much out of her. Thantasy: [Martha] Perhaps she will let me just hold her. Like I held Lucy many night. If she won't have me for company, I'll put a chair outside the door and sleep there. Thantasy: [Martha] I'm a very alert sleeper, wake at ths slightest sound. As Hugh has found out. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Moved by her willingness to help, and hugs her.) Thank you. Pickering is quite lucky. Thantasy: [Martha] I really think we have noting to worry about. I believe that she is determined to make love to you while fully conscious. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I agree. As I said, I simply feel uncomfortable about her being alone. Thantasy: [Martha] She is the type to get what she wants, no matter what the price. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Eyes widen.) But I will ask her if I can keep her company when I take her soup up to her. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Well, I believe that on that score, I can give her what she wants, and more. Thantasy: [Martha] Well, I think we are all in accord, then. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Are we ready for dinner? I could use some sherry.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I assume you did not wish to don the apparatus immediately? Thantasy: [Liza] No, not right away. Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Nods, knowing what Eliza wants most of all.)
