Thantasy: <The doorbell rings.>

Thantasy: [Liza] <Opens door.>

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, how very nice to see you, Miss Jessie, Miss Miriam.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Very nice to see you too, Liza.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Good morning, Miss Doolittle. Are we too early?

Cardaniel80: (Surprisingly, they have their bags with them.)

Thantasy: [Liza] No, I'm sure you've been expected. The professor and the Colonel seemed quite intrigued by the project.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Clearly relieved, although she has tears brimming in her eyes. They carry their bags in.)

Thantasy: [Liza] I'll show you right in.

Thantasy: [Liza] Would you like some help with those things?

Thantasy: [Jessie] No, we can manage. Thank you, Liza.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh, you're so sweet. They're quite heavy. Could you manage one?

Thantasy: [Jessie] On second thought, Yes, here, Liza, take one of Miriam's.

Cardaniel80: (Miriam's lip is quivering.)

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, it is heavy. Must be hard work, this playwright stuff.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Ummm... yes. Books, you know.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] And, ummm, costumes.

Thantasy: [Liza] Been reading a book myself.

Thantasy: [Liza] And it had costumes in it, too.

Thantasy: [Liza] Interesting costumes.

Thantasy: [Liza] Whew!

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Glad for distraction.) Have you, Liza? What is it?

Thantasy: [Liza] <Sets bag outside parlor door.> It's a book on morals.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] The author wouldn't like us, I'm afraid.

Thantasy: [Liza] Advice about the handling of young women who are in need of correction on certain points of conduct. Actually, I think the author might fancy you two.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh... is it for maids, then?

Thantasy: [Liza] No, it is for young ladies. Many of the pictures in the book had women that remind me of you in their appearance.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Arriving at the parlour door.> Well, let me announce you.

Thantasy: [Liza] Professor Higgins, Miss Blakely and Miss Harshom are here to discuss their play some more.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Come in, please ladies... Oh, I see you have your bags with you....

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh Professor! (Tears running down cheeks.) We had to leave our hotel!

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, you poor things!

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] I think they suspected. I know they did. The clerk treated us so rudely... and the way he looked at us!

Thantasy: [Liza] <Guess theatrical folk aren't liked around here.>

Thantasy: [Liza] I'll excuse myself, sir.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] It's... we try to hide it, but maybe it's the way we look at each other. And I can't stop myself from holding her hand, sometimes.

Thantasy: [Liza] I'll be waiting if you need me.

Thantasy: [Liza] Would you like me to take the young ladies' things to the guest rooms, sir?

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Yes, I believe they will need to stay with us... if that is acceptable to you ladies?

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes, thank you for the hospitality.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh, Thank you so much, Professor!

Thantasy: [Jessie] Liza, just take a few of the bags, don't overtax yourself.

Thantasy: [Liza] Thank you m'am. I'll do me best.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Exits.>

Thantasy: [Liza] <Oooo, these weigh a ton!>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Now, Miss Blakely, Miss Harshom, I hope that settles your mind on your accomodations. Have you reached a decision?

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Looks to Jessie for final commitment.)

Thantasy: [Jessie] This whole affair has, I must confess, removed all traces of doubts from my mind! I can not stand to see my partner suffer in this way.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, it just seems to happen anywhere we go!

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] The world cannot accept our love for each other. Maybe the next world will be different.

Thantasy: [Jessie] <Strokes Miriam's shoulder.> She is much too fine and gentle a soul to be treated like some branded thief.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Takes Jessie's hand and smiles at her through tears.)

Thantasy: [Jessie] There, there, dear.

Thantasy: [Jessie] So, gentlemen, we have dcided to go through with the plan as discussed.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Professor, can you... do it? The way we said?

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I'm sure that I can.... if I may ask a few questions as to exact details.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes.

Thantasy: [Jessie] I would, however, if I may...

Thantasy: [Jessie] Ask that your servant, Liza, join us.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Ah, yes, Miss Doolittle. I shall summon her at once. <Pulls bell cord.> Now, for the coffin... and it will be glass, as we discussed.... to know the necessary dimensions, I shall need to know the position you would like to occupy relative to each other.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Trudging back for another load, hears the bell.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Goes to door.) Eliza? Could you honor us with your presence? The two ladies are eager to have you join us.

Thantasy: [Liza] Be ever so glad to, sir!

Thantasy: [Liza] <And give me bleeding arms a rest!>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Colonel, perhaps we could have sherry all around.... ah, Miss Doolittle! We were about to have a glass of sherry. Oh, do sit down, ladies!

Thantasy: [Liza] Thank you, sir. I shall moderate my intake.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes, the dimensions.

Cardaniel80: [Pickering] (Pours, as usual.)

Thantasy: [Jessie] We don't want to be cramped.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Actaully, we are hoping for a bit of room to move around in.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Now, the amount of time before you suffocate would increase with the size, of course.

Thantasy: [Jessie] "Coffin" may convey less size than we would like.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] No doubt. Few are actually built for two.

Thantasy: [Jessie] It might be an expensive project, but all of our resources are available for this.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Let me see... would you say five feet, by four feet, by 18 inches would be sufficient?

Thantasy: [Jessie] We were wondering if this could be done.... perhaps just a bit larger.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Oh, I'm sure anything you desire can be done.

Thantasy: [Jessie] I'm afraid you underestimate our height.

Thantasy: [Jessie] We are both five foot six.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Very well... would six feet in length do it?

Thantasy: [Jessie] Four feet for width sounds fine.

Thantasy: [Jessie] But perhaps at least two and a half feet for height, so that we might be able to adjust our positions.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] For the location... would you prefer to be indoors or out? The seafront is quite lovely here.... and there are practical reasons for conducting the exercise outdoors.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Outdoors would be splendid, don't you agree, Miriam?

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh, that sounds simply beautiful!

Thantasy: [Jessie] At least, let us do this in the sunlight.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Ah, sunlight. (Speculates on the effects of sunlight on a glass coffin.)

Thantasy: [Jessie] But about the matter of our air supply... we were hoping that it might be possible to encase us completely, except for a very small opening, through which a hose might be passed, that would allow some air in, but tight enough that when that hose were crimped or stopped, then the air supply would be cut off entirely.

Thantasy: [Jessie] We would like to be assured of at least fifteen minutes.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I see... yes, that can be arranged. Would it be yourselves who crimp the hose?

Thantasy: [Jessie] No. We would like to leave that in the hands of another.

Thantasy: [Jessie] We would like some uncertainty...

Thantasy: [Jessie] We would like to not know exactly how much time remains to us, so that we do not dwell on that.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I should think that in the sunlight, the heat would become a greater factor than the air. Would you prefer it that way?

Thantasy: [Jessie] Perhaps this could be done in the cool of the morning or the evening. I understand you have some very pleasant sunsets at this time of year.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Ah, yes... gorgeous. And a fitting time of day for this event.

Thantasy: [Jessie] And perhaps the glass encasement could be kept covered or shaded during the day.

Thantasy: [Jessie] But as to the matter of whose hand will be the one to shut off the air...

Thantasy: [Jessie] We have discussed the matter....

Thantasy: [Jessie] And we were hopeful that Miss Doolittle might volunteer.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Looks at Liza in surprise.) Ahhh....

Thantasy: [Liza] <Gor, I'm going to be a stage manager, sounds like!>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I'm sure she will exercise her responsibility admirably. (Winks at Pickering.)

Thantasy: [Liza] <Still thinking it's a play.> If it's all right with the professor and the colonel, I shall be most honored.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Fancy me, a stage manager!>

Thantasy: [Jessie] Thank you, Liza.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Splendid, then. I'm sure you will learn a great deal from the experience, Eliza.

Thantasy: [Jessie] <Embraces her.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] One more question....

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I happen to possess a fluid that would, if introduced into the glass... coffin, for want of a better word, would preserve your bodies in their present form indefinitely.

Thantasy: [Jessie] AH! You have anticipated our other request!

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] We might bury you with instructions left behind to disinter you in, say, one hundred years, in an age when people may look with more understanding on your love.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes! Another purpose for the hose.

Thantasy: [Jessie] That after the, um, scene had been completed, the air could be sucked out and such a fluid injected, and then the seals made tight.

Thantasy: [Jessie] And, yes, you have anticipated our other concern.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Indeed, that is the way I visualized it... would you like this to occur before your expiration, or definitely after?

Thantasy: [Jessie] Definitely after. I understand that this form of, um, departure is rather pleasant, carbon dioxide being odorless.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] It is indeed... especially considering the manner in which you plan to occupy your time.

Thantasy: [Jessie] And again, we want an element of uncertainty.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Perhaps, we shall fade, not even knowing that it is happening.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Only knowing that we are making love.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I believe that would be correct.

Thantasy: [Jessie] As for the time for the disinterment... perhaps not a hundred years.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Miriam is a bit of a mystic, and her instincts curiously coincide with my judgment.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Yes, when shall the world see you again?

Thantasy: [Jessie] I should think seventy years would be an appropriate amount of time.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Seventy it is, then! Easily done.

Thantasy: [Jessie] That will make it about June, 1969, I calculate.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Imagine using such a number for a year!

Thantasy: [Jessie] I think the world will be ready then....

Thantasy: [Jessie] to take down some of the STONEWALLs that have been placed around people like ourselves.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Mostly to himself.) What would the world be like then?

Thantasy: [Jessie] It may be time then for the world to begin to take a fresh look at things.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I believe we have enough information to begin work, then. And I do feel for the pain you have experienced due to your love of each other. I hope you are correct.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Well, we shall be very grateful for your hospitality during these last few days.

Thantasy: [Jessie] As you make the final preparations.

Thantasy: [Jessie] How many days do you think it will take?

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Would Sunday be acceptable? I believe I can make everything ready by then.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Do you agree, Miriam?

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Sunday.... To have a time, now, a date when we can be together and express all our love to the world.... (tears brimming in eyes again) Yes! Please, Sunday!

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Would you like to be tied together in any way, or would that interfere with your movements too much? I am thinking of afterwards... you would not wish to roll away from each other.

Thantasy: [Jessie] We shall consider your advice concerning a harness or other device to keep us together.

Thantasy: [Liza] <I think I seen something in the book what might be helpful to them. Do some more studying.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Yes. Perhaps if you could tell me by tomorrow, then there would be no delay in the... we might call it a ceremony.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Even the word "sacrament" might be appropriate.

Thantasy: [Jessie] And, Professor, we would like Miss Doolittle to understand, by Sunday, the full import of this ceremony.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Ah, by all means, if she is to participate.... would you like to take care of that, as you will be staying here, or should I?

Thantasy: [Jessie] You know her best. But we shall be available if you feel it would be helpful.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Very good, then. I will give her the details (smiling towards Liza) and will request help if needed.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Perhaps we can take the opportunity, though, to get to know her better ourselves in these few days.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Oh, I'd like that, getting to know some ladies of quality and breeding.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] I'm sure you will enjoy each other's company.... as she has already become your assistant.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Now, my partner and I are rather tired and would like to rest. But, perhaps, if the Colonel could fill our glasses again, we could have a toast.

Cardaniel80: [Pickering] I'm eager to oblige, as I do feel a toast coming on. (Fills glasses all around, including one for Liza.)

Thantasy: [Liza] <Got to limit myself to just one, today, at least.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Now, Miss Harshom, I believe you must mean you have a toast in mind?

Thantasy: [Jessie] <Raising glass.> To a brilliant sunset on an old world and a beautiful new dawn to come!

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Smiling broadly.) SO well put. I shall drink to that eagerly.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Miriam, would you like to add something?

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes...

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] To love.... to anyone we love, no matter what the world says... to love lasting forever.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Hear, hear.

Thantasy: [Liza] Hear, hear.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Quietly.) Indeed.

Cardaniel80: [Pickering] Yes, to love. (Raises glass.)

Thantasy: <All clink and drink.>

Cardaniel80: [Pickering] I have never heard a more moving toast, or more appropriate.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Ah, well, if you could show us to our room, Miss Doolittle?

Thantasy: [Liza] Um, I would like to propose a toast myself if I could?

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Surprised.) Certainly, Eliza.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes, that would be fine, I'm sure, Liza.

Thantasy: [Liza] <Still almost entirely clueless, remembering something she heard in the theater once.> Break a leg!

Thantasy: <Good natured laughter.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Chokes, but raises his glass with a smile.)

Thantasy: [Jessie] Charming Liza!!!!!

Cardaniel80: [Pickering] Yes, I believe we can drink to that one as well.

Thantasy: <Laughter.>

Thantasy: [Jessie] <Drinks.> Professor, you MUST have a discussion with her.

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] (Mouths to Jessie.) I know!

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] You are such a sweetheart, Liza... if I may call you that.

Thantasy: [Liza] Certainly. It's my name.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] If we're to become friends, if only briefly, would you call me Miriam then? (Turning.) You too, Professor, Colonel?

Thantasy: [Jessie] And please call me Jessie.

Cardaniel80: (Both men nod, smiling.)

Thantasy: [Liza] Now, by the way, <leading them out of the room> in this book, I've been reading, there's a picture.......

Thantasy: <Women exit.>

Cardaniel80: [Higgins] Yes, Miriam, Jessie... friends indeed.

THAT NIGHT

Thantasy: <Knock, knock.>

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Is that you, Liza? Please do come in.

Thantasy: [Liza] I was just popping in to see if there was anything you required before I calls it a night.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] We were hoping we could talk to you a bit. About.... the play.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Yes, do come and sit for a while, if you can, Liza.

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, I'd enjoy talking about the play very much.

Cardaniel80: (Both are standing in front of a mirror, their hair down, combing it.)

Thantasy: [Liza] I likes this creative life. I did look at me book. I think I got some ideas if you want a sort of harness.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] We were wondering what you thought of the characters.... well, their feelings for each other.

Thantasy: [Liza] Their feelings? Well, I don't know right what to think.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, their feelings of love. Being lovers. Do you believe that can happen? Oh, and we'd love to hear about the harness.

Thantasy: [Liza] I mean, I think it's very, very nice for people to love each other. And I do see that the poor lambs are in a bad way. The whole matter of, well, women being with each other in that manner is a bit outside me experience.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, so misunderstood.... so many people try to make them feel ashamed. The play will not work if the audience doesn't believe such a love is possible. That's why we need you to tell us.

Thantasy: [Liza] Well, of course, you're talking more than friendship, more than sister-like love even. You're talking actual romantic stuff, obviously.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes. Lovers touch, and caress, and hold each other close. That's what we mean.

Thantasy: [Liza] I'm sure people believe there's such stuff possible. I know I do. But that isn't to say how people might feel about it.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] You do? Have you ever thought about being with a woman... the way you'd be with a man?

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, my!

Thantasy: [Liza] I....

Thantasy: [Liza] well....

Thantasy: [Liza] I did read some books at me last place of employment.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh, tell us about the books!

Thantasy: [Liza] Some more books by that Mr. A. Nonymous. And a couple by his sister, too, I think.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Smiling.) Yes, we do enjoy his work.

Thantasy: [Liza] And, sure, I let me imagination run a little.

Thantasy: [Liza] And I must say, I did not find the idea, um, unpleasant. But I can't say as I would find it preferable over being with a man.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Crosses the room to sit on the side of the big four-poster bed, and Jessie sits with her, very close.) Come and sit, Liza. (There's a chair facing them.)

Thantasy: [Liza] Thank you, Miss Miriam. <Seats herself.>

Thantasy: [Liza] I mean, I know that some people raise a big hoop and hollar about such stuff, because it's supposed to be against their religion.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Sometimes it seems more likely that a woman would know how to please another woman better than a man would.... doesn't it?

Thantasy: [Liza] Well, yes, there is that aspect to it....

Cardaniel80: (Liza can't see, from her seat, that Miriam is rubbing Jessie's back.)

Thantasy: [Liza] but that's mostly, it seems, a matter of knowing and knowing isn't always the best guide in such matters, I think. I mean, feelings are so very important.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Oh, one way or another knowing your lover is so important... not just the pleasant things, but knowing them deep inside.

Thantasy: [Liza] Well, yes, and that's another level, all together. I mean, women certainly think more like each other than they think like men. But I'm not always sure that thinking just like someone makes for the best partnership.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] And feelings, yes.... can you ever control those feelings, when a certain man wants a certain woman, or a woman wants a certain man? It seems beyond our power to choose, sometimes --- it just happens. And if a woman should begin to have such feelings for another woman...

Thantasy: [Liza] If two people thinks just alike, how do any new ideas get in? But I do see what you mean, sometimes it isn't like a matter of choice.

Thantasy: [Liza] Like I'm very fond of certain greens and it's not like I chose to be fond of them.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Of course when you are in love, you believe you have chosen... but in other ways it is like lightning striking.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Smiling.) I know a line from a great writer, Lewis Carroll....

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, yes I like him! Tell me the line.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] In one of his books a character says, "I'm so glad I don't like Brussels Sprouts... because if I liked them I'd eat them all the time, and I just couldn't bear it!"

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, that's very, very good! I do enjoy his stories.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] You see, we like what we like, and we love what we love... and we can't imagine the world being otherwise.

Thantasy: [Liza] I understand that the queen was also very fond of his books and asked to see more of what he had written... and she was surprised to find that most of his other books were about mathematics! Hard to imagine a mathematician having that kind of imagination!

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, he was a fine mathematician... but such a clever man in spite of it.

Thantasy: [Liza] But, yes, back to what you was saying....

Thantasy: [Liza] It is very hard to imagine not feeling what you feel...

Cardaniel80: (Miriam sitting still closer to Jessie now, pressing her side against Jessie's.)

Thantasy: [Liza] or feeling what you don't feel. But then there is the purely practical side. It's very difficult to imagine what something feels like that you've never had the experience of.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, sometimes you must try something before you really can know whether you like it. Perhaps the person in Carroll's story had never even tried Brussels Sprouts... how sad that would be, that he would not try to see whether they were good.

Thantasy: [Liza] No matter how much you might read in books, that can only take you so far. Like I read some stories about being on the sea, and it sounded very exciting. But until I actually took just a short trip on boat, from one coast town to another....I never really knew what it was like.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Smiling.) Did you like it?

Thantasy: [Liza] It was sort of what I expected, but there was more that I had had no idea about. Actually being tossed about on the water... very different from walking on land.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] And you could never have imagined those things until you had the experience.

Thantasy: [Liza] Now, mind you, I did not find it completely pleasant.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Smiling.) But it added something to your life you would not otherwise have had, did it not?

Thantasy: [Liza] I don't think I would like to go around the world like that Mr. Fogg in the book by Mr. Verne, but I am glad that I had the experience of that short trip.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Perhaps a few experiences are well left alone.... but there are some that one should not miss for anything.

Thantasy: [Liza] And my little venture did help me to understand about sailors and people who travel a lot.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes! Understanding! It is always pleasant when you can say "I understand now."

Thantasy: [Liza] I mean, I am in agreement that some things have to be experienced in order to be understood. And I think it's a very foolish person who does not want to increase his or her understanding. You don't have to go to sea and sail around the world to have some understanding, but you should leave dry land at least.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Looking at each other.) We're glad you feel that way. We both had the feeling that you could be our friend.

Thantasy: [Liza] Oh, I do want to be your friend, much as is befitting, considering me position in the household.

Thantasy: [Jessie] Now, Liza, you should not be so concerned about social distinctions.

Thantasy: [Liza] Well, thank you ma'am. I appreciate that.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Yes, a sweet person such as yourself would be welcome anywhere.

Thantasy: [Liza] But, still, the world is what it is...

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Sigh.) Yes.

Thantasy: [Liza] And, though I'm not as bad as some, I know that me pattern of speech sometimes gives me away. Like when I would go to the market for the widow, and some lady who was a bit better spoken than me, well, she would get the attention of the shopkeeper first. Though I know, in me heart, I'm every bit as good as she was.

Thantasy: [Liza] So, I can somewhat understand the plight of the lambs in your play, being judged for things what have nothing to do with how good they is inside.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] Perhaps... but it's really just like reading it, though, isn't it?.... you haven't had the experience, truly knowing what they feel.

Thantasy: [Liza] Well, no, I can't really say that I have, not in any meaningful way...

Thantasy: [Liza] I did, when I was a mere girl, have a moment or two with a female cousin of mine.

Cardaniel80: [Miriam] (Smiling.) Tell us about the moment or two, though.

Thantasy: [Liza] I don't know where we might have gone, if we hadn't been interrupted. And, yes, I have been sorry that me father came home just when he did...

Thantasy: [Liza] because we never had time to get very far, and so I don't really know. Well, I was just beginning to, um, come into me womanhood... and me, um, breasts was just starting to grow a little....
